Stevens Retires from Supreme Court
Yesterday, Associate Judge John Paul Stevens announced he will soon retire from the Supreme Court. Why does this matter to Mount Pleasant? Because Justice Stevens represents that rare combination of legal conservatism and sound moral justice. He is the long-sought-after "compassionate Republican." Today's political turmoil requires a replacement who will provide the same leadership qualities, knowledge of the United States Constitution, and an understanding of stare decisis to maintain sound and just decisions. President Obama will need to look carefully for a candidate that has the integrity required to withstand the terrible test of the Congress this summer. We all wish the candidate well.

Isn't it amazing when "W" was in office, he jammed down our throats the Chief Justice, now that we want a justice, they make it sound like we are illegal or immoral.
Justice Stevens was appointed by a Republican (Ford) and I believe still considers himself a Republican, but states that he hasn't changed politically speaking, since the 1970's when he was appointed, but the party has changed to the extrenme right.
It's sad that a relatively small majority of Americans has hijacked the Republic party.
I still consider myself an independent having voted for both the "D's" and the "R's" in the past. For the last 10 to 12 years though, I believe my negative feelings may have started with Newt Gingrich, the total devotion to nasty politics from the "R's" has eliminated me from voting for most of them. The "D's" have also been nasty at times and I won't vote for those politicians either but the "R's" seem to be far too devoted to their ideology than ever ingoring consideration to any other thoughts from anyone with a letter other than an "R" in front of their name.
