Federal Deficit 1981-2012

This chart from Wikipedia provides the Federal Deficit by year, president and party in control of Congress.

Please note that the deficit has grown continuously, except uder President Clinton, that President Obama inherited a huge debt from President Bush, and that the projected growth through 2012 is decelerating.

You may want to increase magnification to see details.

This has been out there since President Obama started but somehow, the teaparty has been successful at blaming the deficit on Obama. The other interesting aspect on this graph is how much Reagan and Bush #1 pushed us it no deficit - way more than Obama!

Thanks for the prespective! Maybe if it gets repeated enough, the truth will finally start sinking in.

congress spends the money and sets the budget. Every democrate controlled congress has increased the debt. The majority of Clinton's administration was under shared or republican control... which made a surpluss

You need to divide this by GNP, or correct for inflation somehow so that a 1982$ and a 2012$ are the same size on the graph (I saw no comment on any such correction so assume it is raw US$ throughout).

If you are feeling nasty show the Canadian deficit beside it, but only if you are feeling TRULY nasty.
